What is his motivation? What is his ultimate goal?
Police Detective Fox Windlow is a hard man to figure out. Tough-as-nails Becca Wallerby left all remnants of her past life in Chicago and drove to Sweet Willow, North Dakota to become Sheriff in the predominately all-male town. It is and was a job Fox Windlow determined was rightfully his.
From the moment Becca arrived in the outskirts of town, the battle lines between these two are drawn. It just isn’t always clear what battle they are fighting.
Fox can be so sweet: cleaning Becca’s house, giving her a kitten, massaging her nerve-wrecked muscles in her back. He can also write her a $200 traffic ticket for a U-turn and push her to the brink of sheer rage. He is calculating as he is sweet, angry as he is loving. So what gives? She finds herself responding to his charm and his energy in some surprising ways.
The mysteries deepen, involving not only Fox’s personal agenda, but who murdered the original Sweet Willow Sheriff, inside the very house Becca is currently living in? Where does Dan, Fox’s handsome and single partner fit into all this? In a town of mostly males, when a woman enters, it’s every man for himself.
Except Becca not only wants a fresh start in Sweet Willow, she wants to leave some ghosts back in Chicago. Things she’d rather her new officers and neighbors not find out about. Like who her mother was, her past love life and other deeply personal things they just don’t need to know. Things she will fight to keep them from finding out.
Until she finds out the FBI agent sent to solve the murder of the prior sheriff is one of her former flames. Until she finds out Fox has methods to dig deep on his new boss, uncovering all her layers of dirt.
When the killer tracks them down, not only is it every man for himself, it is the end of the battle lines and time to make peace if they hope to make it out alive.
