Hello. I hope your holidays are going well. Mine is super crazy. I hope I never release a book during November and December again! I gave up on the idea of decorating this year and just stuck my 2 foot tree-in-a-burlap-sack on a bookcase by the window. I tossed six ornaments, a string of lights and a star on it and called the whole decorating thing done. But I have been super busy with other things to occupy my time instead. Read on….

First, I signed up with BookFunnel. This is a cool site where I get a bunch of free/ discounted downloads for my Kindle. I even have this grand illusion one day I will get to read them.

The first book I want to offer on BookFunnel is my romantic comedy novella, “It Happened at the Park”, now free for the taking but only until January 1, 2018. You might be prompted to sign up for my newsletter, which only comes out about 3 or 4 times a year max. You always have the option to unsubscribe to that after you get the free download of “It Happened at the Park.”

If all goes well, I plan to offer other books for free periodically. Here is the tagline:

Cassidy’s a career girl, not a dog mom. Then she inherits her sister’s two pampered pups. Hopeless, she meets Ethan, the hunky dog park ‘daddy’.

It Happened At The Park - Tara200

Okay, next up, I have two full-length novels releasing very shortly. And I’m also promoting the heck out of them on virtual blog tours.

Set against the exciting backdrop in the chase for the Triple Crown and filled with mystical surprises. Season is not a witch, but she can make a horse run and Ty’s heart race.

Season Moriarty is part fey and part druid. She can see the future and alter it. She welds control over the natural elements of earth, wind, fire and water as well as manipulating life and death. And she is an accomplished racehorse trainer, able to get any horse to run like the wind. Now Season has landed the dream job that will test all of her skills and abilities.

Ty Masters runs his horse racing business with an iron fist. No one dares to question him. He hires Season based on her reputation. Then they meet. Immediately, she questions him, challenges him, infuriates him, intrigues him, captivates him, and even intimidates him a little. Then she spellbinds him. But can she make a Triple Crown winner out of his willful colt?

Mysterious threats to Ty’s racehorses bring him and Season together in another kind of race against the clock. As the stakes for the Triple Crown rise and the identity of who wants to destroy Ty, so does the undeniable interest and the fiery sparks between them.

Up next is a sweet, contemporary Christian romance. “Rainbows in the Moonlight”.

A Southern romance novel about family, forgiveness, starting over, and love.

Koda Jacobs urgently needs a nanny–right now. Fresh from prison, Dalton Clayton needs a job–and just about anything will do.

Divine Intervention steps in and tosses Koda and Dalton together. Koda struggles with the conflicts of her impulsive decision to leave her babies with an unknown, convicted felon. That just can’t be wise, can it? But she can’t help but see how quickly the children bonded to him and trust him. Or the reassuring sense that this is just right. Meanwhile, Dalton stumbles through the spills and thrills of two young children, and his growing interest in their mother. A chance meeting brings him back to his estranged family as well.

Over time mutual attraction forms between  Koda and Dalton as the bond between Dalton and the children deepens. A sweet, southern romance full of forgiveness, second chances, and fun kids.

“Rainbows in the Moonlight” releases in e-book format December 20th.

The Magic of Books blog tour begins December 26th, and once again I have a $10 Amazon gift card up for grabs. The Reading Addiction book tour runs February 5-9, 2018 and I am giving away a free, signed paperback of my backlist Christian romance novel.

In even more exciting news, my Christian romance to release last November, “Beside Still Waters”, will be available in paperback starting January 10th, 2018 on Amazon. You can pre-order it now at this link:  http://amzn.to/2C0aG9V

Top Journalist and corporate climber McKayla Buchanan is sent to a remote California mountain camp for inner-city, at-risk teens. Accustomed to political and high-society assignments, she is suddenly a fish out of water. At Camp In As Much, she meets eight hostile and distrustful teens, assorted volunteers, rescued horses—and Clay.

Clay Michaels is the man who founded Camp In As Much and made it the success it is now. His hope for the highly recommended journalist is to come and write a feature to send seeds out to form other camps like his nationwide one. He never considered the reporter would turn out to be a lovely woman, or for him to have such an attraction to her.

Between McKayla’s worldly experience and Clay’s strong faith, they form a partnership to help with the endless challenges of the kids.

While McKayla’s assignment is supposed to be temporary, it isn’t long before she and Clay are each wishing it could last longer. A serious situation will force McKayla to decide if she can give up her worldly ways and place her faith in the same higher source that Clay does.

And lastely, (whew!) I am also promoting a holiday buy for a good cause (because I don’t have near enough stuff to juggle just yet). You might remember my collie, Ty, who I adopted March 2015 from the Collie Rescue of the Carolinas. He arrived with so much emotional baggage, we almost needed a U-Haul to bring it all with us.

It has been a rough and wonderful and never boring journey with Ty, helping him overcome his past. He’s pretty well adjusted now, almost three years in, and I am very happy with everything about him. Over the months, I journaled and blogged the steps, successes, failures, doubts, and included loads of photos. This past summer I created a self-published novel on Kindle KDP and have it available in Kindle and paperback up on Amazon.

A portion of each sale will go back to the Collie Rescue of the Carolinas. Now there is a holiday purchase you can feel doubly good about!

That’s Ty on the cover. He is such a pretty, happy boy, isn’t he?

Okay, that’s it. I did mention there was a lot going on, right? If you want to keep up with my comings and goings, below are my social media links. Some I am more active on than others, and a lot of it depends on my writing/editing/promoting/ and life schedules.

Oh yeah! I nearly forgot…how could I possibly forget this? Edits will begin soon for the January 2018 release of Limitless Publishing’s “Craving Country” anthology. I am one of the contributing authors to this collection with my short story called “Crazy Woman Creek”.  Follow my media sites for updates as things unfold for “Crazy Woman Creek” and the “Craving Country” anthology collection.

I am delighted to have paranormal author Calry Jordynn here to talk about her newest young adult/ new adult release, Sasha Bishop: Shifter. How is this for a cool cover:

Ryan: Welcome, Carly. So what can you tell us about Sasha Bishop?

Carly: Hello. I am excited about my new book, releasing June 1st with Soul Mate Publishing. This is a young adult, new adult paranormal romance.

Ryan: Wow, that’s quite a mouthful, and certainly packs a lot into one book.

Carly: This is book # 2 of 3 of the Sasha Bishop Vampire Slayer series. Here is the hook:

Her classmates are becoming vampires. Sasha is accused of being their Sire. The one person she thought she could trust has turned against her. The handsome new vampire in town has the power to make her turn away from Hutch. Prom, graduation, and a supernatural war are looming. Will Sasha make the right choices to save the day?

***   And the back cover blurb ***

Sasha Bishop is the Slayer. With her Halfling and Vampire allies by her side, she had fought and won a vampire war. Now some of her classmates are missing. When they resurface as vampires; they accuse Sasha as being their Sire.

Trouble brews for Sasha and her vampire boyfriend, Hutch when he sides with the newborns. It takes the war to a whole new level. It’s become personal. Angry and hurt, Sasha finds comfort with handsome vampire, Rhydian McDavid, who has an alarming connection to her Slayer past. Now, she must pair up with some unlikely allies to stop a vampire massacre at the Prom, all while being crowned the Prom Queen.

The battle doesn’t stop there. The Vamps of Craig’s Creek are back with a vengeance and plan on making Graduation a buffet. A storm, tornado, and some surprising revelations, guarantee Sasha’s life will never be the same.

Ryan: Umm, humm, not your typical, boring prom night. That’s for sure. Sounds like Sasha and her friends have a whole lot going on. Which that means there is plenty of page turning excitement and plenty of twists. Here is just a little excerpt to tempt and tease:

Alarm bells went off in my head. “1848? Where have you been?” I then slapped my hand over my mouth as realization came over me. Rhydian laughed, shaking me up and down where I sat on his stomach.

“It’s all becoming clear isn’t it, Slayer?”

I put my hand on his chest. “You know Hutch, don’t you?”

He laughed again. “Yes, I knew Andrew when he first came to Villa Mirage.”

“Did you know Joseph and Molly?” I asked. Joseph and Molly were my great-great-grandparents. Joseph had been Hutch’s best friend and Molly had been the Slayer. She was killed two weeks shy of her seventeenth birthday.

He sat up so I was now on his lap. We were nose to nose again. My lips parted of their own accord. His head came closer to mine and then he laughed. “I won’t be your rebound Vamp, Sasha.”

I felt heat rise into my cheeks. What was I doing? I loved Hutch.

Rhydian’s words were like a splash of cold water to my senses. Anger coursed over me. I stood and yanked him up with me. I reached for my stake in my boot and came up empty handed.

Rhydian held my stake up and grinned. “I’m disappointed. I thought the Slayer would have known I was stealing her weapons.”

I grabbed for the stake. He held it over his head, just out of my reach. I jumped for it and grabbed the stake triumphantly. That is when he grabbed me. He drew me close against his body. My heart thumped into overdrive. He grabbed the back of my head and crushed his lips into mine. It wasn’t a gentle kiss. This was a full out assault. He pulled me tighter against him, almost like pulling me into himself. My hands wrapped around his neck of their own accord. My stake dropped harmlessly to the ground. When he finally lowered me, I was unsteady, my lips throbbing. I looked into his eyes, almost afraid of what I would see there. His eyes were troubled, like he didn’t expect to feel anything from what we just did. What started out as a joke on his part to make me angry had backfired.

I bent to retrieve my stake and came up empty handed again. I knew I had dropped it somewhere. I felt Rhydian stiffen next to me. I turned slowly, knowing who I would see.

“Looking for this?” Hutch held my stake out to me.

I stared at him wordlessly. No noise would come out. What had I done?

Hutch glanced at Rhydian. “What are you doing back in Villa Mirage?”

Rhydian slipped his arm around me. I flinched from his touch. “Oh come on, Sasha. Don’t be that way. You know you liked that kiss.”

Anger, shame, horror, and dread washed over me. “Did you know? Did you know Hutch was out there?”

He laughed. “Of course, and if you had been paying attention, you would have known too.”

I turned to Hutch. “I’m sorry.”

“Save it, Sasha,” he barked. “I have eyes. I don’t need a play-by-play of the details.”

In the mood for a free book? I always am! And I love giveaways. Having just finished the giveaway for a bracelet to launch the cover reveal for my upcoming novel ‘Chasing the Painted Skies’, I want to do something else.

If you didn’t win, no worries! I have more stuff planned throughout the year.

First, in honor of the print edition of Shimmers of Stardust now being available, as well as the e-book digital version, I am giving away a print paperback copy. So head over to Goodreads.com  and look for my author page or follow this handy widget:

The giveaway runs from September 22nd through October 22nd, 2015.

Shimmers of Stardust

Don’t recall what ‘Shimmers of Stardust’ is about? It’s a twisty blend of time travel and Christian romance. Reviews so far call is a “sweet, romantic story of redemption and forgiveness”, having “time travel, 1800’s history, page turning suspense, a sexy bad boy and a strong heroine”, a “great, uplifting read’ ‘and “with some fun twists and turns the reader might be surprised at how this romance end.” (Amazon review quotes) In July, InD’tale Magazine gave Shimmers of Stardust 4 1/2 stars, saying  it is “an interesting time travel romance with a hero and heroine that will quickly have readers enamored.” They also called it “funny, light-hearted, sad, scary and wonderful all rolled up into one shining star!”

So it looks like folks have been enjoying this book. I call it fun. It was fun to write. Civil war hero, Logan Riley, turned renegade is hanged in 1869. He survives, being found alive in 2014 by anthropologist Dr. McKenzie Lynne. Kenzie had been hired by a team of physicists to find a time travel missing link. Realizing it was Logan, and what they intended to do, she runs, taking their living treasure.

Now they’re hunted like criminals, by obsessed physicists and military who will stop at nothing to get them back. As they escape further into the desert and mountains of New Mexico and Arizona, Kenzie’s strong faith works on Logan’s bad boy heart. Slowly, she convicts him of his lawless past. And love blooms between them like desert flowers.

As the hunters close in, it becomes a show down  and a test for their love between modern military armed with everything, Kenzie’s Christian morals and Logan’s nineteenth cowboy justice.

Never Turn Your Back…

Never Reveal Your Name…

Never surrender Your Heart…

Angels in the Shadows cover

With a jaw popping hook like that, I am super delighted to welcome Amy Deason to the blog to discuss her new book, ‘Angel in the Shadows’. Amy, hello and thank you for stopping by. What can you say about your book?

AD: It’s  my debut book in the ‘Angel Series’, released with Soul Mate Publishing  on July 15th. There are six titles planned for the series. Here is a bit more about this freshman story:

Madison Sinclair is a smart-mouthed photographer that enjoys the simple things in life. Recently landing a job at one of Manhattan’s top imaging companies, she works hard to prove herself but often falls short of the mark. Taking pictures of the New York scenery, relaxing at home with a glass of wine, and caring for her stray cat is the highlight of her day. But when her best friend convinces her into covering a charity event thrown by a handsome billionaire, Madison’s life suddenly becomes anything but simple as she finds herself in a constant race for survival. There is nowhere she can turn, no one she can trust.

Seth Reynolds has been in the game a long time. He knows how to get in, get a job done, and get out with no complications and no witnesses. Trained to be cold and heartless, he is committed to follow through with this mission no matter what. Racing against an impossible time table, everything is in place to take out the madman intent on destroying New York City. But when the naïve Madison Sinclair stumbles into his world, all of his carefully laid plans go to hell.

Determined to do what is right at all costs, Seth must choose between the rules he’s lived by his entire life or saving Madison from a fate worse than death. If he follows orders, he will be an unsung hero, saving millions of innocent people. But if he risks his own life for Madison’s, the entire city will be in jeopardy. The choice should be easy. Risk one to save many. That’s the unbreakable code of The Perfect Order. But now, without even trying, Madison has gotten under his skin and inside his heart. With the fate of the city resting in his hands, how he can do the right thing when he no longer knows what that is?

RJS:  How indeed? This is a must read to find out if he breaks the unbreakable code or not. Does he save the girl or save the city?  Choices…choices…what’s a guy to do?

AD: And here is a bit of an excerpt:

Just like Seth, the Porsche was dark, mysterious, and masculine. Things were not improving. She shied away from thinking about that monster in the alleyway, the one that had his hands on her, touching her. She couldn’t think of that now because she would come apart completely. So she focused on Seth instead and used the anger that had been building up for the lost several hours. God, she really needed to get away from him. But she needed to understand what she was up against. And that was nearly impossible since Seth was refusing to tell her anything. The sneaky bastard! She would just have to figure out a way to make him talk.

Making her voice as strong and determined as she could, she looked at him and said, “I have a right to know what is going on.”

He didn’t even look in her direction. “Your rights end when and where I say they do. Don’t push me too far Miss Sinclair. You won’t like the result,” he warned.

This guy was really beginning to piss her off. “Damn you! Tell me what the hell is going on!”

A ghost of a smile crossed his soft lips, drawing her attention to them. He remembered how they felt on hers. She shoved that away before the annoying lust could distract her from her plan of action.

“Damn me? Sorry to ruin your little tirade but I’ve been damned for a very long time. Nothing you can say or do can make it worse,” Seth’s voice was low and quiet, reflective.

She must have imagined the small amount of emotion in his voice. But real or not, it cooled some of her anger, making her wonder again just who the hell this guy was. Definitely not the self-effacing personal assistant she had taken him for just yesterday. But as intriguing as that question may be, she had no intentions to stick around and find out the answer. There was the saying about curiosity killing the cat and as curious as she was, learning that particular bit information was not something she was willing to die for. Maybe if she could open the door and jump out. But he was going so fast. He didn’t slow down much as he took the corners but maybe that small change in speed would make the difference between getting injured and being killed. At this point, she didn’t think she had much to lose by trying. Furtively, she reached over and gripped the door handle, waiting for the next turn.

“Don’t think you can try jumping out when I slow down. You really don’t want to make me angrier than I am now.” Seth’s voice was calm and soft, not betraying any emotion but she had enough sense to be afraid. Releasing the door handle, she crossed her arms over her chest, her hands balled into tight fists. Man, she wanted to just sock him!

Beside her, Seth shrugged indifferently. “Then again, maybe you should jump out. Though it would probably be suicide. I’m not sure how you feel about dying but at least I wouldn’t have to save you again.”

“I never asked you to save me. You did that on your own,” Madison replied heatedly.

“My mistake. Next time, I’ll just let them have you.”

“Next time? Who says there’s going to be a next time?”

Another uncaring shrug of his strong shoulders. “Just call it an educated guess.”

Scowling, she asked, “Why even take the time to save me? You’re just going to kill me.”

“I never said I was going to kill you.”

“No, but you didn’t say you weren’t either.”

“Touché” He turned to her with a small, tight-lipped smile.

“Why don’t you just tell me what is going on?”

He sighed, exasperated. “If I tell you anything, you’re as good as dead.”

His threat was ominous but she sensed he was telling her the truth this time. Considering the circumstances, that fact wasn’t exactly encouraging. But maybe his honesty would continue for a while longer.

“I’m probably a dead woman anyway so there’s really no harm in satisfying my curiosity is there? Consider it a last request.” Madison tried to sound brave and add some humor to her situation. As long as she could remain lighthearted, she would be able to keep her wits about her so maybe she could get out of this thing alive.

“I applaud you for your attempt at levity. But believe it or not, this situation is not funny in the least and it’s not my intention to see you dead, Miss Sinclair.”

She twisted in the seat, facing him, one eyebrow raised questioningly. “No? Then just what are your intentions Mr. Reynolds?”

“I really can’t tell you. You’re just going to have to trust me.”

“I don’t think so.”

“You know,” he replied lightly, “if you would have trusted me in the first place, your friend would still be alive.”

RJS: Wow, I just had to come down easy from that one. What a ride! Already I applaud   Madison and want to get to know Seth a bit more. Where can it go from there? When the car ride ends?  Can you tell us more about you?

AD:   I learned to read at the tender age of three. Once I started, I never stopped. Growing up, I could always be found snuggled in some quiet corner with my nose stuck in one book after another. My desire to read soon led to my passion for writing. As a child and teenager, I wrote poetry and short stories for my family and friends, delighting them with my vast imagination. From child to adult, I have continued to read everything I can get my hands on. My love for a good book knows no boundaries and crosses every genre imaginable.

I currently live in NW Arkansas with my wonderful husband, Shaun, and three energetic children. But of course our family would not be complete without our two loveable shih tzus, Tucker and Dylan. Recently, we welcomed a new addition to our household, a rambunctious boxer puppy named Buck, and since then, our lives have never been the same.

When I’m not working or writing, or possibly sneaking in a few quiet minutes of quiet reading, I can be found with my family riding bicycles around town, playing sports, watching movies, or taking pictures. (Although I take so many photographs, the kids try to run and hide every time I break out the camera).

RJS: Oh, too funny. I can identify with your beginnings of hiding away in some quiet spot to read and who can forget those early bits of writing we just had to scribble? How many of us can raise our hands? My poor fur-kids are so sick of me snapping their adorable pictures, they automatically turn their heads away from that annoying blinding flash each time I pick up my camera phone. The way we make the poor souls we love suffer so….
Seriously though, anything else you’d like to add before we close out our visit and mention the giveaway a bit more, Amy?

AD: I would love to hear from you, the reader. You can reach me in several ways:

Katie Teller cover pic

Today I am delighted to welcome Katie Hamstead to my blog. Some time ago she hosted my then current release so now it’s nice to return the favor. ALERT! She is also going to offer an e-book to a lucky commenter.

Katie, welcome so much and what can you tell us about your book?

KH: It’s entitled ‘Dancing in the Athenian Rain’ and it’s a New Adult time travel romance.

RJS: Okay, I’m already hooked. I love time travel stories and have read some good new adult and even young adult books. I think we identify and remember when we were those ages, even those  of us who haven’t been there in a while. So what can you tell us about it? First of all, where did such a title come from?

KT: It kind of came from the music I was listening to. The song “Summer Rain” by Slinkee Minx made it onto my playlist, and the title came to me from those lyrics. I was a twelfth grade student when I wrote the original manuscript of this, and I think that innocence comes through in the MC still, even after tons of rewrites and editing.

RJS: Yes, many of us have projects tucked away from our early days. Those first attempts, those learning curves. Sometimes they become more and sometimes they already served their purpose. I am glad this one has become more beyond a twelfth grade story. What else can you share?

KT: Here is my blurb:

When Donna is sent back in time to Classical Athens, she’s furious at Dr. Stephens for sending her against her wishes. Then a Greek soldier purchases her to be his wife.

She’s forced to learn a new language and culture, and faces her fears of never returning to her own time. The society hates her, especially because they think she’s an Amazon, which forces her to confront her issues—being compared to her genius brother, borderline abusive friends, and a cheating boyfriend.

But her husband, Peleus, is kind and patient. Although against her best judgment, she allows him into her heart. He counters all the negative voices from her past, but those voices drive a wedge between them. She must let go of her fears, her inhibitions, and insecurities, and admit her feelings, or she could lose him and the life they’ve built.

RJS: Wow. Okay, Katie, that does take me back to how it felt in eleventh and twelfth grade. Didn’t all deal with some form of those same issues? Now, what personal goodies can you share about yourself?

KH:  I was born  and raised in Australia, my early years of day dreaming in the “bush”, and having my father tell me wild bedtime stories, inspired my passion for writing.
After graduating High School, I became a foreign exchange student where I met a young man who several years later I married. Now I live in Arizona with my husband, daughter and our dog.
I have a diploma in travel and tourism which helps inspire my writing. I currently work as an Acquisitions Editor with Curiosity Quills Press to help support my family.
I love to out sing my friends and family, play sports and be a good wife and mother. I love to write, and take the few spare moments in my day to work on my novels.

RJS:  Yes, it’s hard to be mom & wife, hold down a household and job outside and write. So when does this officially release?

KT: All I know is September 2015. I don’t have the exact date yet.

RJS: That’s cool. Those dates can sometimes change anyway. So where can we find you socially? You know, to watch for updates on a release date.

RJS: Okay, Katie, I am glad you stopped by. Our time is winding down but you did promise an e-book to someone. Can you give the details?

KH: I would love to gift an e-copy of my other Soul Mate release ‘Branded’ to a random commenter. This is a thriller story about a woman on the run from a general who branded (marked) her for death. Just leave a comment below with a contact information.

RJS: Easy enough. And I know from reading the reviews on ‘Branded’, it’s been considered intense, action packed, thrilling and impossible to put down. Many of the reviews start with ‘Wow” and go from there. So as we say good-bye, Katie, I wish you great success with ‘Dancing in the Athenian Rain‘. And congratulations.

Some time ago I had the pleasure to host husband and wife writing team, C.D. Hersh– Catherine and Donald– on my blog. We showcased their second in the Turning Stone Chronicle collection, “Blood Brothers “.  Today I am welcoming Catherine and Donald back to discuss the latest book in the series, “Son of the Moonless Night” (the Turning Stone Chronicles, Book # 3).

Be sure to leave a comment below. C.D. is giving one e-book away from the series to a random commenter. Winner selects which book from the series they want to receive. (How generous is that?)

So, without further ado, welcome back Catherine and Donald. In just a few words, what can you tell us about this latest urban fantasy/ paranormal suspense romance?

Thrust back into the world of paranormal huntress, Deputy Coroner Katrina Romanovski must unravel a string of murders she believes are vampire attacks. When she discovers the shape shifter she’s in love with is the murderer, she must reconcile her feelings for him, examine her life of violence against paranormals, and justify deceiving him in order to bring him to justice.

This book has a sensual heat level and released on May 27th, 2015.

RJS: Wow! What a hook! What a lot to offer– not your grandmother’s love story. So can you share a little more?

CD: Here is our back cover blurb:

Owen Todd Jordan Riley has a secret. He’s a shape shifter who has been hunting and killing his own kind. To him the only good shifter is a dead shifter. Revenge for the death of a friend motivates him, and nothing stands in his way . . . except Katrina Romanovski, the woman he is falling in love with.

Deputy coroner Katrina Romanovski has a secret, too. She hunts and kills paranormal beings like Owen. At least she did. When she rescues Owen from an attack by a werebear she is thrust back into the world she thought she’d left. Determined to find out what Owen knows about the bear, she begins a relationship meant to collect information. What she gets is something quite different-love with a man she suspects of murder. Can she reconcile his deception and murderous revenge spree and find a way to redeem him? Or will she condemn him for the same things she has done and walk away from love?

RJS: Love sure does have a way of complicating things, doesn’t it? And for making it better and richer as well. Just because I want to know more about this book, can you share a snippet?

CD: Sure…

A crash in the alley stopped Katrina Romanovski mid-stride. Like the October mist swirling in off the lake, her gypsy blood stirred sending her intuition into high gear. Something unnatural was happening.

Go see what’s wrong. She heard her father’s voice as clearly as if he stood next to her.

On the heels of his words came her mother’s pragmatic warning in clipped British tones. You know what curiosity killed. Katrina pushed the ever-present warning aside. Mom never approved of Dad’s supernatural hunts and even less of his drawing her into them.

Pulling the oversized cross she always wore out from under her shirt, Kat looked around for a weapon. Please, not a vampire. I hate vampires! A piece of wood sticking out of the trashcan at the front of the alley caught her eye.

Grabbing it, she broke the end off into a sharp point. The mist-filled air filtered the light from the single bulb over one of the alley doorways. The wind swirled the loose trash around making a quiet approach difficult. Sidestepping the paper, with the stake in one hand and holding the gun she took from her purse in the other hand, she crept into the alley.

A roar echoed against the buildings, the sound nearly sending her running. That roar wasn’t a vampire. It sounded more like an animal. Kat inched closer. In the yellow pool of light from the back door of the building, a black bear, over seven feet tall, reared on its back legs and swung its paw at the man standing at the edge of the light. He crashed to the ground, shirt torn open from the slashing claws. Blood covered the fabric, and he clasped his left hand over his shoulder to stem the flow. The bear bent toward him, teeth bared in a smile. A wicked smile.

Kat aimed her gun, but before she could pull the trigger, a shot rang out. The flash of gunpowder lit the face of the injured man. The blast reverberated against the buildings. With an enraged bellow, the bear staggered backward against the wall. Shaking his head, the animal dropped to all four paws. Weaving like a drunk, he lumbered toward his attacker. The man took aim again, shooting the animal between the eyes. Animal and human collapsed on the dirty, littered pavement.

As she started to move forward, Kat’s gypsy senses crawled over her skin like angry red ants. As she slipped back into the shadows, the bear shed fur. Changing size. Then, finally, turning into a man.

Shape shifters. Her stake wasn’t any good against them, and her bullets weren’t silver. This one appeared dead anyway. Had the wounded man seen the shift? Tossing the stake aside, she paused by the shifter and quickly moved to the wounded man. Out cold. Still human.

When she touched him, his eyelids fluttered open. “Did I get it?”

“The bear.”

RJS: Personally, I think this sounds very exciting and a great addition to CD Hersh’s family of stories.

RJS: Here is a little personal info about this dynamic writing team. Hint, if you didn’t already catch it, they are husband and wife:

Putting words and stories on paper is second nature to co-authors C.D. Hersh. They’ve written separately since they were teenagers and discovered their unique, collaborative abilities in the mid-90s. As high school sweethearts and husband and wife, Catherine and Donald believe in true love and happily ever after.

Together they have co-authored a number of dramas, six which have been produced in Ohio, where they live. Their interactive Christmas production had five seasonal runs in their hometown and has been sold in Virginia, California, and Ohio. Their most recent collaborative writing efforts have been focused on romance. The first two books of their paranormal romance series entitled The Turning Stone Chronicles are available on Amazon. The third book in the series Son of the Moonless Night was released mid-May by Soul Mate Publishing.

Kim Loraine is visiting today, bringing “Restoration: A Golden Beach Novel“, her first release from Soul Mate Publishing. I am happy to have Kim here to talk about her contemporary romance book.  Alert! She is also giving away one e-book copy to a random commenter so be sure to leave a comment below.

Welcome, Kim. Your book has such a pretty cover. What can you tell us about it?

KL: This is a story about self-discovery, a theme I am very ‘about’.  Below is the back cover blurb:

After the tragic death of her fiancé, Grace McConnell turns to the only remaining constant in her life, her work. So when she’s offered the lead position for an international restoration project, she jumps at the chance to get away from her small town, full of John’s memories.

Drew Tensley has always been a hard worker. Dedicated to his family and community, he put aside his own London career to take over the family business after his mother’s terminal diagnosis. Five years later, he’s ready to start living for himself when he literally runs into his hometown’s newest architect.

Grace quickly discovers that traveling halfway across the world was the best decision she’s ever made. Until she meets Drew, a man whose personality and lifestyle are the exact opposite of John’s, but whose face is the spitting image. Struggling with her own motivations and feelings, research uncovers secrets she isn’t ready for; secrets that could ruin her second chance for true love.
RJS: Let’s have some fun with a few random questions.  First, what got you started writing this book?
KL: Restoration is my debut novel. I started writing it because this idea popped into my head and wouldn’t go away. I’d written lots of half-finished books but with this one, I knew I needed to get it all out. I wrote it while I worked a full-time job, mothered two small children, and then finished it as I completed my BA and moved to Japan with my family! To say it was a labor of love is an understatement.
RJS: Yes, I have to agree with that. As writers, I think we all have challenges that will make us give up or press ahead to, as you said, “get it all out”.  You certainly had several. So, what is a typical writing day like for you?
KL: My typical writing day starts after I drop my daughter off at her Yochien (Japanese pre-school). I usually get distracted if I am home by chores. I hop on the train and head into town where I find a place at the Starbucks we have right on the water. Gorgeous views. I’m the kind of person who won’t go out unless I feel presentable, but if I do take a writing day at home I’m in yoga pants and a work out top. It gives me no excuse to take a break to exercise if I’m already dressed for it. I’m a big snacker so I have to rein myself in or I’d weigh a thousand pounds. I like almonds, cucumber, and, if I’m craving a sweet treat I munch on chocolate chips.
RJS:  Ah, what is not to love about munching on chocolate chips? Or chocolate anything. How did you handle the news when Soul Mate Publishing wanted to publish Restoration?
KL: When I got my contract offer from SMP I was at Tokyo Disneyland with my family and my Mom who was visiting. Best Day EVER! The day Restoration was released we also went to Disney to celebrate.
RJS: That sounds like a cool way to celebrate almost anything. Is there anything else you’d like to mention? A little more about you perhaps?
KL: I started writing at a young age, scribbling down song lyrics, short stories, and poems I was too afraid to share with anyone. Busy working as a music teacher in my Pacific Northwest hometown, it wasn’t until my family of four picked up everything and moved to beautiful Japan that I decided to finally take the plunge and send my characters out into the world.
The central theme in my books is self-discovery, whether that is found through taking risks, breaking down walls, or admitting mistakes. I like to write characters that seem like ‘someone you actually know’, who find that love is a journey not without its challenges. When not writing I spend my time with my husband, chasing around our crazy kids, exploring Japan, and binge-watching Doctor Who on Netflix.
RJS: Can you give us an excerpt of Restoration… just a little snippy tease? Please?

“I’m saying this once more. Once, Grace. I love you. I want you. But I’m not perfect and I need time to sort this mess out, too. Don’t run from me.”

Her heart hurt. Physically hurt. And she fought down the urge to give in to him—to accept his love.

You’re sick Grace, you need help. Donovan’s hateful words barreled through her memory like a steamroller. How could you do this to John? She shook her head and had to clear the lump that gathered in her throat.

“No, Drew. I’m saying no.”

“Why are you doing this?” His face was heartbreaking beautiful, even as she could see the hurt coursing through him.

“Please, just go.” It was barely a whisper.

“Don’t do this.”

“Drew. I realized something the other day when you met Marianne. You are just a replacement for John, he’s the one I want, but can’t be with. I was using you and I need to stop. Now you should go and I have to get help.” The lie tasted bitter on her tongue.

His face fell as she said it, however untrue it might have been. She could see him fighting the words that were bubbling to his lips.

“Right. Thanks for that.” His eyes met hers, anger and frustration plain. “I guess you’ve put me in my place. I’ll let you alone then. Goodbye, Grace.”

RJS: Awesome. I love it. Below are the links to connect with Kim:

RJS: Now, our time is closing out, but we promised a giveaway, didn’t we? Kim, would you like to share what readers need to do to win?
KL: I’m gifting one copy of the e-book. Saturday, June 13th, we’ll pick one lucky commenter and give them a copy of Restoration. So be sure to leave a comment, with an email for me to contact the lucky winner.
RJS: Kim, it has certainly been a pleasure to have you here. Good luck with Restoration and your future endeavors. Good luck to the readers who comment and leave their email contact information.

November is a great month. It ushers in the true autumn weather and it heralds the beginning of the holiday season. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. November is also the anniversary of when my debut fiction novel, Whispers in her Heart, was published by Black Lyon Publishing.

Like all anniversaries, there should be a celebration of some sort. And I will be giving away the gift. Leave your comment below, any comment will do, between now and Monday, November 24th. On Tuesday the 25th, I will randomly select one comment and that person will get a free, autographed paperback copy of ‘Whispers in her Heart’ mailed to them.

* Please leave some form of contact, or check back after Tuesday, November 27th, so see who the winner is. I will make every effort to contact the winner privately for their mailing address.

Okay, so in case you are asking yourself, just what kind of book is this free paperback, well it’s a romance. Contemporary romance, with paranormal threads and mysticism woven in, blended with a healthy dose of mystery and horseracing. Below is a blurb.

           She had a mystical reputation….

Third-generation horse trainer, Season Moriarty, has just taken on the impossible. Hired by the handsome, and notoriously difficult Ty Masters to transform him wild colt into a legendary racehorse, she comes face to face with a threat to the horses that puts even her special gifts to the test. As it turns out, the whispers in her heart do indeed carry a bit of the mystical–along with a warning.

…but what lay between them was pure magic.

Ty Masters, owner of the world-renowned Heritage Farms, has turned out more than one champion in his now. Now so much of his financial future rests on the colt, Sky Hunter–just as so much of Sky Hunter’s future rests in the hands of Season Moriarty. Has Ty been wrong to trust her? Something about her seems almost spooky–and so lovely that she has his heart racing faster than the horses.

Whispers cover

So we have a little bit of everything inside that cover; romance, horses, a hero and heroine made for each other, a mysterious threat and special gifts. Now, if you want your own free autographed paperback copy, leave a comment (and some form of contact info) below before Tuesday, November 27th.
