I am happy to showcase a series by Soul Mate author Rebecca E. Neely. I have read two of the books in her Crossing Realms trilogy, and reviewed her first book, The Keeper, on this blog last year. The Betrayer is the 3rd book in the series and is currently being written now.

THE KEEPER  (Book 1)

Nick Geary, jaded clan leader of human guardians, the Keepers, is doomed to love a human woman who’s forgotten him, time after time, for thirteen years: Libby Klink, a skittish accountant who’s as terrified of her recent and strange intuitions as she is of her mundane existence.

When Nick is ordered by the clan’s guiding force to seek Libby’s help in defending the clan against enemy Betrayers, romance sizzles as the pair forms an unlikely alliance in their desperate search to discover the key to the clan’s salvation—which Libby alone holds.

But a haunting secret could cost Nick everything, and in a race against time, both will be forced to choose between their hearts and duty. Can their love, and the clan survive, or will the very forces that drew them together ultimately destroy them?

THE WATCHER  (Book 2)

Hell bent on avenging his own death, former Keeper Dev Geary eagerly accepts when the Watchers task him with returning to the human realm to discover the secret for rendering Similitude—the very thing that killed him.

But to succeed in the seven days he’s been granted, he’ll need to work with the one human who wants nothing to do with him, and who he can’t help falling for—Meda Gabriel, a cagey, street smart bar owner with a unique skill set, and maybe, the key to his mission.

With the clock ticking and the Betrayers barely a step behind, can Dev overcome his demons and find the answers the clan so desperately needs, with Meda at his side? Can love find a way, or will he be forced to abandon her and the clan, leaving them all to face imminent destruction?

Can a former Keeper hell bent on avenging his own death conquer his demons in time to save his clan, and his heart?

BONUS! REVIEW OF “THE WATCHER”!

“The Watcher” picks up where Book 1 “The Keeper” ended. To fully understand the characters, the setting, premise, etc…, I would highly recommend starting with book 1 first. Otherwise, parts of book 2 will not make sense. That said, “The Watcher” is the suspenseful story of Dev Greary, and introducing Meda Gabriel. It is fast paced, spicy, and full of loads of romance.

Dev, a returning character from book 1, and a hero in his own right, is fresh from his recent death and hell bent on revenge. Except he is charged only to helping his fellow Keepers clan to avoid catastrophic trouble. A lone wolf, Dev’s death hasn’t chilled him out much. He still lives “between the inches” in every situation.

So now he is back on earth, albeit temporarily, thanks to The Watchers. He has seven short days to right some wrongs and save human kind from the damage of the Betrayers. And, well, if he can manage to avenge his death, so much the better. Right?

To succeed at the revenge, he needs to get very lucky. To succeed in helping the Keepers and all human kind, he needs the help of Miss Meda Gabriel. She is the daughter of a late scientist and researcher whose work aligned very much to the non-human Keepers. Meda is the perfect match to Dav’s devil-may-care personality. She’s independent, wicked smart, and takes no crap from him. Ever. She sees right through him.

In fact, the lovely Meda can see a lot of things, with just a simple touch. Unfortunately, she can’t see into Dev’s heart and soul. And his Watcher ability to see into human’s vistas doesn’t work with Meda either.

Be prepared to read about a fair bit of scientific stuff–some factual and some probably a bit of literary fantasy. For example, I learned that everything contains energy. To paraphrase Ms. Neely, “Good energy, bad energy, it is everywhere and in everyone. Vitality is the whole of those energies”.

Ms. Neely has once more created a cast of characters, both good and bad. who are committed to their passions. Whether it is saving man-kind or destroying it, she blends suspense with science, with adventure, and with spicy romance in an artful style that will keep the reader turning the pages.

Time is short. Only seven days allowed. The clock–and the passions–are ticking.

I was honored and flattered when C.D. Hersh contacted me, inquiring if they could feature their latest release,  The Mercenary and the Shifters, The Turning Stone Chronicles, book four. Of course! It’s a fascinating series and I have no doubt this book is just as awesome as the previous three.

This is a sensually hot, urban fantasy paranormal suspense romance. Don’t you just love the mish-mash genres? I sure do! This book releases today– July 27th, so you can get your copy now. Or really treat yourself and get all four in the series–even better.

What is this about? I am so glad you asked. Here is the back over description:

When mercenary soldier Michael Corritore answers a desperate call from an ex-military buddy, he finds himself in the middle of a double kidnapping, caught in an ancient war between two shape shifter factions, and ensnared between two female shape shifters after the same thing … him.

Shape shifter Fiona Kayler will do anything to keep the shipping company her father left her, including getting in bed with the enemy. But when she believes the man trying to steal her company is involved with kidnapping her nephew, she must choose between family, fortune, and love. The problem is … she wants all three.

Now, that sounds full of action, and sexy hot romance. Here is an excerpt to whet your appetite:

Mike’s presence in her bedroom as she gathered overnight items for the guesthouse comforted Fiona. It also set jitters off in her stomach. The man was hot and muscular and very alpha. He’d removed a sword and gun from his duffel bag and slung them, along with a bandolier of ammunition, over his shoulder after they’d been attacked. The sight of his weapons and his protective behavior did unfamiliar, disconcerting things to her.

“Does the guesthouse have a phone?” he asked over her shoulder.

Fiona jumped and slammed her palm to her chest. “Jeez, don’t sneak up on me. I didn’t hear you cross the room.”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to frighten you.”

“After what happened tonight, it won’t take much to make me jump. And, no, it doesn’t. But I’ve got my cell.”

“I’ll need the number.”

“Ditto, on yours.”

“I think you need to take your gun. The one you pulled on me.”

“After tonight, I’ll sleep with that baby under my pillow.”

Mike studied her. “You’re certain you don’t have an idea who might want you dead? What about the group you’re dealing with? What was the name again?”

“OmniWorld? I think I’m more important to them alive, at the moment.”

A knowing smile flashed across Mike’s face, and she realized he’d tricked her into revealing the name of the cartel she’d withheld earlier.

“At the moment?”

She thought about the cargo Mr. Swindell’s associate had forced her to ship. Had he’d lied about the cigarettes? If he had, she needed backup. Hugh trusted Mike. She needed to do the same.

“I’m handling some freight for them. I don’t think they want to off me, at least until the deal’s finished.”

Mike swore under his breath. “What are you mixed up in, Fiona?” When she didn’t answer he continued, “If I’m going to help, you have to be completely honest with me.”

She cringed at the word completely. Honesty with anyone, at this point, could only be partial. How much could—should—she tell him?

A mercenary soldier lands in the middle of a double kidnapping, an ancient shape shifter war, and two female shape shifters after the same thing … him.

Oh-oh. You just know this is a super book. Take a look at the entire series:

This cover says it all: what is waiting at the end of this dark, mysterious passageway?

51fV4nhe20L._SX334_BO1,204,203,200_

Libby Klink and Nick Geary, a very unlikely pair. She’s as human as you and I, he’s a Keeper– as close to human as possible.  The Keepers are human helpers, moving among us as needed, lending a hand against the evil forces at work. They sure stay busy with all the craziness in our lives today.

Ms. Neely did a superb job creating alternate realms and deep characters and explaining the paranormal elements. I do wish Libby had questioned Nick a little more thoroughly when he suddenly showed up, spouting this outlandish tale. To me, she seemed a little too quick to accept things that most of us would just not buy into that fast. A little too trusting. However, there is no denying the chemistry between Libby and Nick is good, real– and hot.

For an intriguing and suspenseful paranormal story, this book is indeed a keeper. There is plenty of action and good characterization. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next book in the Crossing Realms Series.

I am pleased to welcome Soul Mate Publishing author, Tracey A. Wood, to the blog. She is here to talk about her book, “Midnight Angel”, the Council, book 1. Tracey, hello and what can you tell us about your book?

Tracey: Following a vicious and bloody attack by an unknown predator.  Kat Shaw is drawn into, a life and death situation, where the shadows hold the creatures of nightmares, and she views death through the eyes of a killer.

MIDNIGHT ANGEL-Soulmate 505_505x825 (2)

After almost losing her life in a vicious, bloody attack. Kat Shaw, a thirty-something, divorcee, discovers that there are such things as monsters. And the predator who attacked her is not human. She starts to develop unusual skills which have murderous consequences. And is an unwilling witness to multiple, brutal murders, seen through the eyes a killer. Thrown into a battle of Good vs. Evil, she falls in love with two men who are not what they seem. While her attacker stalks her and continues to murder the innocent. She has to find the inner strength to take on and fight the demons from hell. To protect her family and friends while also trying to save her own life.

What is this book about?  The Genre is Paranormal Suspense / Romance. There are three main characters. Kat Shaw – She is divorced with one son. She lives and works in London. The second is Berith he is a fallen angel. The third is Michael who is also a fallen angel. Kat accidentally stumbles, into a battle between angel’s and demons.

How long did it take? I originally wrote Midnight Angel in 2010. It has been revisited a number of times, since then.

Where do you write?  I mainly write in bed. Weird I know. I will make notes or write scene outlines, while watching the TV. Then I toddle off to bed with my laptop and type away. At the weekend, I will often read through a chapter and modify it while I cook the Sunday lunch. I carry a little note book around with me and make notes of ideas, when they pop into my head.

Are you working on anything else right now? I am currently working on the sequel but I can’t tell you, it’s a secret.

Hardest part about writing? The hardest part of writing is the editing. Most defiantly the editing.

Here is a short EXCERPT:

The park was empty at this time of night. All the children had gone home hours ago. The nights were getting colder and the evening air bit through my clothes, making me shiver. A light dew clung to my hair and skin as the darkness closed in around me, shrouding me from the main road.

After a long day at work, I made my way along the manmade path. It was a good shortcut taking fifteen minutes off my journey. I would soon be home, safe and warm.

What to have for dinner? Hmm. Pizza! Yeah, I’ll dial a pizza. Treat myself. Why not?

Happy with my decision, I carried on my way.

Pulling my jacket collar up around my neck, I tried to beat the cold and the shiver running up my spine.

A sharp pain shot through my head, stunning me, and suddenly I was flying across the path. My forehead hit the ground with an audible thump. Another powerful flash of pain. Black blotches blurred my vision as I tried to focus on my surroundings.

I attempted to get up but something struck my back, flattening me to the ground. The wind rushed from my lungs. I couldn’t move! A heavy weight sat on my back, holding me down. I struggled to draw enough air into my lungs. Something sharp penetrated my back, then my arms and the top of my leg. It was pure agony!

What’s happening? Have I been stabbed?

Tucking my flailing hands under my body, I attempted to get up, a silent scream trapped inside me, but the weight held me in place.

Snaking my body, I wriggled across the compact soil of the path, attempting to pull myself forward. It was no use. I couldn’t even get to my hands and knees.

My clothes were ripped from my back as the onslaught continued.

The pain slowly dulled, even though I was still at the mercy of my attacker. My heart pounded with fear as this predator snatched at my body. I was shaken violently from side to side. My gut told me my attacker was male. He was dominant, strong, and overpowering.

Oh God, this can’t be happening. No, please. I don’t want to die!

Glancing around frantically for a weapon, I realized I still had my keys in my hand. Without thinking, I slashed them behind my back with as much force as I could. They bit into something soft. Warm fluid flowed over me.

I had hurt him and possibly made him angrier. This unseen person was going to do the unthinkable. He was going to violate me, rob me of my life, or both. I desperately needed to get away from this monster. But how? I couldn’t fight back. Damn it, I couldn’t even move.

Nausea washed over me as my body weakened, my life draining away. A dark mist clouded my mind, consuming me, consuming my thoughts. I was going to die here in a lonely, dark park in the middle of London. I would never see my family and friends again.

Why? Why? I want to live. Help me, please help me, someone!

As if this monster had heard my silent plea, the shaking suddenly stopped. The weight lifted slightly and I could breathe. Relief washed over me.

Had the attack finished? Did he think I was dead?

I lay still, faking death, struggling not to take deep, gulping breaths. I fought the panic pumping through my body.

I became aware of a stroking sensation on my back, a light caress. Small strokes, followed by a sound I could not identify. The strokes became harder and the noise louder. A wet, squelching sound.

What is that?

My head spun with confusion and panic as I strained to locate my attacker. I saw a movement from the corner of my eye. I turned but couldn’t focus. It was too dark and I was in shock.

Warm liquid ran down my back, arms, and legs. Blood. My blood, but there was no pain, still no pain.

In a moment of clarity, I knew I had to move. To get away before my attacker struck again.

Wow, very nice. Chilling and hot at the same time. And here is a link to the trailer you recently made: https://traceyawoodblog.wordpress.com/2016/06/12/midnight-angel-by-tracey-a-wood-release-on-22nd-june/

Okay, Q& A time, ’cause we like to be nosy here and get to know ya. Name the most recent movie or book you’ve enjoyed? Most recent movie is Deadpool. I really like Ryan Reynolds in any movie. Book: I have just finished The dirt on ninth grave by Darynda Jones. I love her Charley Davidson series.

How did you meet your spouse/ significant other? We met at work. We both worked for a china manufacturing company. In fact, he proposed to me there, outside the main entrance.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? Would you keep your day job (if you have one?) If I won enough money, I would give up the day job. We would move to somewhere with plenty of land and I would take in stray and hurt animals. We are both big animal lovers.

What is your favorite past time? Writing or reading. When not doing the day job, or looking after my disabled son, I love to write. When I am on the treadmill a night, I read. If I am having trouble with a scene. I stop, take a break and read a book. Going back to it a few hours later or the next day, gives me a new perspective.

Would you rather have the ability to be invisible or have x-ray vision? Invisibility, I could sneak into places without paying. Lol. But if I had a superpower I would like to teleport. No sitting in traffic, no flying and traveling. It would be brilliant and the time I would save would be amazing.

If you had to give up one of your five senses, what would it be? (common sense does not count here) The sense of smell. I can’t smell very well anyway.

What ‘s a typical day like? Busy. I am up at 5.30 to get my son ready, then myself. Then my three cats. I’m at work for around 6.30 and back home by around 1600hrs. By the time I have cooked the evening meal, seen to my son and had a bath, it’s a bit of TV and bed to write.

How do you like to spend a rainy day? If it’s a work day, it’s the same as any other day. It rains a lot in the UK anyway.  I’m not a sunbather. I get bored when I sit still, doing nothing.

What one item would you grab if the house was on fire? (assume no living beings are inside) My laptop. I could continue to write while I waited for the fire fighters to come.

Describe one moment in time when you took a huge leap of faith. How did it turn out? Sending my book to Soul mate publishing and guess what, it got published.

What’s one favorite thing you do by yourself? I talk to myself and I mean a lot. It’s ok because I also answer myself too.

Favorite food to cook? Curry

Favorite animal? Cat

Favorite color? Purple

Favorite  book? Vampire Academy by Richelle mead

Favorite sport or physical activity? I hate physical activity. I have to force myself to exercise.

Favorite kind of music? 80’s

What makes you laugh? I have a weird sense of humor but I love to watch funny animal video’s

Favorite season? Spring

Which do you prefer for a second home? Mountain cabin, beach house or big city condo? Beach house. I love the sea.

If you had a magic genie, what would your three wishes be? Win the Lottery, big. World peace. Stop cruelty to animals.

What three items would you take if you knew you were going to be stranded on a tropical island for a year? (enough suntan lotion is a freebie) Solar powered battery with my laptop. My husband, he is very handy and can build most things and would catch the food. A very sharp knife.

One quote you love, that keeps you going in life? Everything happens for a reason

One thing few people know about you?  I use to be an advanced scuba diver.

Do you believe in love at first sight? I would like to say yes but I think that is lust not love

Tracey A Wood(1)

Tracey A Wood has lived in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire in the United Kingdom, for all of her life. She has been married for over thirty years and has two children. One of her boy’s lives at home due to being disable the other has flown the coup. She has three cats that are her babies, and she talks to them all of the time. Funny thing is they don’t answer back.

She loves snowboarding, skiing, jumping out of aeroplanes and bungee jumping. Well, that is when other people are doing them. She prefers to have her nose in a book or writing one. She also loves to people watch which her husband is always telling her to stop doing. She has a job that she enjoys and works full time. Although if she won the lottery, that might change! She has also got a very good imagination.

In 2014, she decided to take the bull by the horns and send her manuscript to Soul Mate Publishing. She feels so privileged to have her book published, as this is the first one that she has written. It has made her dream of being a published author a reality. Life really is too short to wait, you’ve got to go for it. She is still working full time and is also working on another book in her limited spare time.  Her favourite saying is ‘Everything happens for a reason’ which she also believes is true.

Her books are fast paced and centred on a female lead who finds an inner strength after being thrown into situations that are beyond her control.

SON OF THE MOONLESS NIGHT_805x1275

Some time ago I had the pleasure to host husband and wife writing team, C.D. Hersh– Catherine and Donald– on my blog. We showcased their second in the Turning Stone Chronicle collection, “Blood Brothers “.  Today I am welcoming Catherine and Donald back to discuss the latest book in the series, “Son of the Moonless Night” (the Turning Stone Chronicles, Book # 3).

Be sure to leave a comment below. C.D. is giving one e-book away from the series to a random commenter. Winner selects which book from the series they want to receive. (How generous is that?)

So, without further ado, welcome back Catherine and Donald. In just a few words, what can you tell us about this latest urban fantasy/ paranormal suspense romance?

Thrust back into the world of paranormal huntress, Deputy Coroner Katrina Romanovski must unravel a string of murders she believes are vampire attacks. When she discovers the shape shifter she’s in love with is the murderer, she must reconcile her feelings for him, examine her life of violence against paranormals, and justify deceiving him in order to bring him to justice.

This book has a sensual heat level and released on May 27th, 2015.

RJS: Wow! What a hook! What a lot to offer– not your grandmother’s love story. So can you share a little more?

CD: Here is our back cover blurb:

Owen Todd Jordan Riley has a secret. He’s a shape shifter who has been hunting and killing his own kind. To him the only good shifter is a dead shifter. Revenge for the death of a friend motivates him, and nothing stands in his way . . . except Katrina Romanovski, the woman he is falling in love with.

Deputy coroner Katrina Romanovski has a secret, too. She hunts and kills paranormal beings like Owen. At least she did. When she rescues Owen from an attack by a werebear she is thrust back into the world she thought she’d left. Determined to find out what Owen knows about the bear, she begins a relationship meant to collect information. What she gets is something quite different-love with a man she suspects of murder. Can she reconcile his deception and murderous revenge spree and find a way to redeem him? Or will she condemn him for the same things she has done and walk away from love?

RJS: Love sure does have a way of complicating things, doesn’t it? And for making it better and richer as well. Just because I want to know more about this book, can you share a snippet?

CD: Sure…

A crash in the alley stopped Katrina Romanovski mid-stride. Like the October mist swirling in off the lake, her gypsy blood stirred sending her intuition into high gear. Something unnatural was happening.

Go see what’s wrong. She heard her father’s voice as clearly as if he stood next to her.

On the heels of his words came her mother’s pragmatic warning in clipped British tones. You know what curiosity killed. Katrina pushed the ever-present warning aside. Mom never approved of Dad’s supernatural hunts and even less of his drawing her into them.

Pulling the oversized cross she always wore out from under her shirt, Kat looked around for a weapon. Please, not a vampire. I hate vampires! A piece of wood sticking out of the trashcan at the front of the alley caught her eye.

Grabbing it, she broke the end off into a sharp point. The mist-filled air filtered the light from the single bulb over one of the alley doorways. The wind swirled the loose trash around making a quiet approach difficult. Sidestepping the paper, with the stake in one hand and holding the gun she took from her purse in the other hand, she crept into the alley.

A roar echoed against the buildings, the sound nearly sending her running. That roar wasn’t a vampire. It sounded more like an animal. Kat inched closer. In the yellow pool of light from the back door of the building, a black bear, over seven feet tall, reared on its back legs and swung its paw at the man standing at the edge of the light. He crashed to the ground, shirt torn open from the slashing claws. Blood covered the fabric, and he clasped his left hand over his shoulder to stem the flow. The bear bent toward him, teeth bared in a smile. A wicked smile.

Kat aimed her gun, but before she could pull the trigger, a shot rang out. The flash of gunpowder lit the face of the injured man. The blast reverberated against the buildings. With an enraged bellow, the bear staggered backward against the wall. Shaking his head, the animal dropped to all four paws. Weaving like a drunk, he lumbered toward his attacker. The man took aim again, shooting the animal between the eyes. Animal and human collapsed on the dirty, littered pavement.

As she started to move forward, Kat’s gypsy senses crawled over her skin like angry red ants. As she slipped back into the shadows, the bear shed fur. Changing size. Then, finally, turning into a man.

Shape shifters. Her stake wasn’t any good against them, and her bullets weren’t silver. This one appeared dead anyway. Had the wounded man seen the shift? Tossing the stake aside, she paused by the shifter and quickly moved to the wounded man. Out cold. Still human.

When she touched him, his eyelids fluttered open. “Did I get it?”

“What?”

“The bear.”

RJS: Personally, I think this sounds very exciting and a great addition to CD Hersh’s family of stories.
